Essential Background
Exploring the Role of Mental Illnesses in the United States
In order for you to get a better understanding of the field of which my project explores, I have presented you with some background information concerning the role of mental health within the United States. After researching many of the issues and progress that could be made in the United States surrounding mental health, I chose to focus on the topics that seemed most important, which were the decreasing the stigma by increasing public awareness, implementing more programs, and offering equal opportunity.

Increasing Public Awareness
Many false beliefs surround those affected by mental illnesses
Because of these false beliefs, an "us vs. them" attitude is created within society
Offensive slang or portrayal of those with mental illnesses is often prominent within the media

Implementing More Programs
Programs for those with mental illnesses have proved very successful, however there are very few in the U.S.
Programs that children can go to in order to improve behavior, receive therapy, or improve social skills can significantly assist them in becoming more comfortable in society

Offering Equal Opportunity
Those suffering from mental health issues can face great challenge when attempting to find employment because of popular misconceptions and societal habits in relation to mental illness that certain employers may falsely believe
By placing emphasis on public awareness of mental health and by implementing more programs, equal opportunity will result.
